NOAA B-Wet / Watershed Education Grant

SEA and Edmonds Community College Learn and Serve Environmental Anthropology Field (LEAF) School have received a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) B-WET / Watershed Education Grant. We are currently recruiting teachers, school districts and teacher-preparation programs for involvement in the program. Benefits for participants will include
- no-cost marine based professional development workshops
- NOAA curriculum and materials
- partnership with NOAA scientists and other state and regional watershed agencies and organizations
- no-cost credit/clock hours
- mentoring support from EDCC Leaf students
- funding to get students in the field for watershed-focused service-learning and community-based learning experiences.

Workshop Schedule
Below please find our currently scheduled workshops. You can download and complete the NOAA/B-Wet Workshop Registration Packet.If you are a teacher / district administrator in one of these areas and are interested in participating and/or having your staff members participate, please contact us for further information. If you don’t see a workshop scheduled in your area – please know that we are currently booking workshops for Fall/Winter 2010-2011 – so please contact us about setting up a workshop in your area!
Below please find a list of our no-cost Winter and Spring 2011 NOAA B-WET workshops. All workshops run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. A specific agenda (including directions to sites) will be sent to registered participants one week before the scheduled workshop. Day one of each program is held aboard the SEA 65-foot program vessel Indigo and day two will be held in various community partner sites, as noted below.

Conservation Northwest is a nonprofit organization committed to connecting and protecting old-growth forests and other wild areas throughout the state of Washington and into British Columbia. They have a variety of potential volunteer projects, including Cascade Citizens Wildlife Monitoring Project and their Adopt-A-Wilderness program, that are amenable to the development of environmental service-learning projects.

Curriculum for the Bioregion. Washington Center at The Evergreen State College is hosting a curriculum for the bioregion project that helps faculty to integrate sustainability across the undergraduate curriculum. The conference and events are good opportunities to meet potential higher education partners and the many of the resources on the website are applicable to K-12 audiences as well.

Learn and Serve Environmental Anthropology Field (LEAF) School. The LEAF School at Edmonds Community College is a service-learning program that integrates AmeriCorps into the college curriculum. Partnerships with tribes, governments, nonprofit organizations and business and industry provide students an opportunity to collectively work to make our local communities more sustainable while learning about human interactions with our ecosystem. LEAF School students are available to help assist teachers with the planning and to serve as mentors in the implementation of meaningful watershed education experiences. K-12 teachers and advanced high school students are also welcome to enroll for one or more intensive two-week summer programs and may be eligible for an AmeriCorps education award of $1,000-$2,362 after the completion of 300-900 hours of service.

Mathematics Across the Curriculum. The websites below are focused on strategies for integrating mathematics into courses across the college and university curriculum. Although the focus is on higher education, the resource pages will be valuable and many of the sample assignments could be adapted for the high school level. Regional Fisheries Enhancement Groups. Regional fisheries enhancement groups engage local citizens in salmon restoration activities. Created by the Washington State Legislature in 1990, these groups are organized as nonprofit organizations and are an excellent resource for assistance with in-class instruction and service-learning activities in your local community. Restoration Ecology for Young Stewards (REYS). REYS is a project and inquiry-based curriculum with classroom activities and field trips designed to teach youth in grades 5-8 about the ecology of Puget Sound. The full curriculum is available for download and can be adapted to other regions of the state as well. Stilly-Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force is one of 14 regional groups focused on getting citizens involved in restoring fisheries and fish habitat.
